How to Produce a Song Start to Finish (Part 3)

MIXING (STEP 9)

-EQ tracks⠀

-Group similar sounds & bus FX⠀

-Render midi to audio⠀

-Sidechaining⠀

-Stereo Imaging⠀

-Automations⠀

-Final mixdown⠀

-Reference mix to similar tracks⠀

MAKE YOUR MAIN ELEMENTS STAND OUT: ⠀⠀

Beginners have all their sounds loud and fighting for attention (which makes a messy mix). Having your main elements more in focus and putting supporting elements more in the background will immediately start cleaning up your mix and making it sound more professional.⠀⠀

⠀⠀

DON’T OVERDO IT:⠀⠀

Beginners tend to over-cut EQ frequencies (which results in thin mixes), or they over-compress all their sounds and have a squashed mix, or they over-layer their/have too much reverb/echo and have messy mixes.⠀⠀

⠀⠀

LEARN STEREO IMAGING:⠀⠀

It’s all about balance. Having everything wide or everything centered is a common beginner mistake. An easy fix: Have your main elements of your track more front and center and the supporting layers/background stuff wider.⠀⠀

MASTERING (STEP 10)⠀

Everyone’s mastering chain is different. The truth is, if you have a great mix, mastering really isn’t all that complicated.⠀

My basic mastering chain:⠀

-Equalization⠀

-Compressor (I use the Glue Compressor)⠀

-OTT (I only use this a tiny bit)⠀

-Ozone (Exciter, Imager, Low-End Focus)⠀

-Limiter (I use the Invisible Limiter)⠀

Reference your master to similar tracks and compare your loudness. Compare your mix on multiple speakers/headphones to make sure it’s balanced. Lastly: Get Pro feedback before sending out to Labels/DJs/self-releasing.⠀⠀
